The Mazda6 has undergone quite the transformation in the last eleven years.

By now you probably know that since we got the 2014 Mazda6 near Clifton NJ, the game has been changed for midsize sedans. The 6 blows many of its competitors out of the water, but we’re not going to be looking at the competitors today. Instead we thought that we would look at a vehicle that has been on dry land for quite a while. It’s the 2003 Mazda6 which was released eleven years ago. That fact makes this comparison an entertaining one. Let’s just say the Mazda6 has come a long way.

The 2003 Mazda6 has an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Obviously it didn’t hold the same technology as the 2014. There was no SkyActiv or i-Eloop technology, but now that there is, the Mazda6 is capable of 25 mpg city and 37 mpg on the highway. That city rating is almost as high as the 2003 Mazda6’s highway rating. It’s pretty crazy what eleven years can do.

The engine also comes with a lot more power than it used to, even though the engines are pretty similar. Both 4-bangers, the 2003 has a 2.3-liter while the 2014 has a 2.5-liter engine. The former is capable of 160 horsepower while the latter is capable of a heart pounding 184. The 2014 also offers an additional 30 ft-lbs of torque. In the world of cars, that’s quite a difference.

Unlike most things, the Mazda6 has gotten more attractive with age.

If you’ve been keeping up with the blog, you’ve already seen the extensive list of interior and safety features that come in the 2014 Mazda6. Prepare yourselves for the 2003 features. Dual airbags and child door locks represent the safety features. As far as the interior goes there are power locks and windows with a single-disc CD player providing all of the entertainment. Just a little bit of a downgrade.

Back when the 2003 Mazda6 was released, people likely thought it was the cream of the crop, and they could probably never even imagine what 2014 would bring. If they thought cars would fly, they were wrong. Close, but wrong. There haven’t been any flying cars released yet, but the 2014 Mazda6 is the next best thing.
