Does the 2016 Mazda CX-9 Require Premium Gas?

It’s a question that comes up all the time: should I use premium or regular gas in my car? A lot of the time, using regular gas in a vehicle is just fine, but in some cases, premium may be the better option. With the all-new CX-9 fuel economy figures recently revealed, we decided to ask the question: does the 2016 Mazda CX-9 require premium gas?

The short answer is, no. When you fill up your new 2016 CX-9 for the first time, you won’t have to worry about paying that little bit extra for premium gas. That being said, you might still want to, especially when considering the new model is impressively fuel efficient, capable of up to 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

In addition, the engine delivers up to 250 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, and this is where you might want to fill up with premium fuel. In order to get the maximum horsepower figures, the CX-9 will need to be running on premium fuel, meaning 93-octane gasoline. When running on regular fuel, or 87-octane gas, the CX-9 puts out a still respectable 227 horsepower.

The truth is, however, that many drivers won’t even have a desire for that extra horsepower. The key to the CX-9’s new turbocharged engine is its high torque at a low rpm. This helps SUV drivers get the power they need right when they need it.
