When Will the Mazda SKYACTIV®-X Engine Make it to the USA?

Mazda Next-Generation SKYACTIV®-X Engine USA Release Date

During the lead-up to the release of the 2019 Mazda3 redesign, one large point of interest was the promotion of a new engine. Many Mazda models use the current SKYACTIV®-G engine design. The 2019 Mazda3 was touted as one of the first Mazda models to offer the next-generation SKYACTIV®-X high-compression gasoline engine that would greatly improve efficiency and responsive handling.

Where is the SKYACTIV®-X Engine?

However, upon its release, neither the 2019 Mazda3 sedan model nor the 2019 Mazda3 hatchback model offered a trim with a SKYACTIV®-X engine option. A much-publicized SKYACTIV®-D diesel engine option was also absent. Instead, all 2019 Mazda3 models in the USA were fitted with a 2.5L SKYACTIV®-G inline 4 engine.

Is the SKYACTIV®-X Engine Coming to America?

Mazda has expressed interest in bringing the SKYACTIV®-X to the USA from overseas. However, they stated they first wanted to supplement the standard 2.5L SKYACTIV®-G inline 4 engine found in 2019 Mazda3 models with a 2L SKYACTIV®-G inline 4 engine option. This would, presumably, offer Americans drivers the option of a less expensive and more fuel-efficient 2019 Mazda3 model.

So, What About the SKYACTIV®-X Engine?

The 2L SKYACTIV®-X engine is believed to produce 178 horsepower and 164 lb-ft of torque inside the new 2019 Mazda3. This is less than the 2.5L SKYACTIV®-G inline 4 engine currently found in 2019 Mazda3 models but improved over the similarly sized 2L SKYACTIV®-G inline 4 engine.
