The 5th Generation Mazda MX-5 Miata Could Be Built With Lightweight Carbon Fiber

How Much Will the 5th Generation Mazda MX-5 Miata Weigh?

A few months back, we addressed the question many drivers have of whether the MX-5 Miata will ever receive a turbocharged engine under the hood. Within that discussion, we mentioned how Mazda’s iconic roadster gets its performance by keeping things lightweight rather than trying to force more power into the engine. Many driving enthusiasts love this approach, but how light can Mazda really go? And how much will the 5th generation Mazda MX-5 Miata weigh?

Although the 4th generation MX-5 Miata was just released last year, we couldn’t help but share this recent news with you regarding what might be in-store for the next generation model. Could the roadster get even lighter than the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s manual-transmission curb weight of 2,332 lbs? It sounds like it may be possible.

According to a recent report from Autocar, carbon fiber material could be used to produce the 5th generation of the MX-5 Miata roadster. The material is said to be lightweight, but expensive. To keep costs down, however, Mazda is said to be working on making it more affordable.

The report also mentioned that smaller 3-cylinder engines could be the power source under the hood. Seeing how the engine found in the US-spec MX-5 Miata is somewhat different from the one in areas overseas, we’ll have to see what the engine specs actually come out to. Plus, since we just entered the 4th generation, this is all likely to be a ways off.
