2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Dealership Arrival Date

If you’re like us, you’re already filled with excitement at the news of Mazda’s new RF Miata variant before even getting behind the wheel. For those who don’t know, RF stands for “retractable fastback,” and the RF model brings a whole new design to the MX-5. But if all you seem to be able to think about lately is when you can get behind the wheel, we’ll share what we know with you regarding the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF dealership arrival date.

When will the Mazda MX-5 RF be available?

opening and closing the 2017 mazda mx-5 miata rf hardtop roofMazda hasn’t said much on when this vehicle will officially go on sale, which is to be expected for such a new model. But there are a few hints to help us figure it out.

For one, Mazda’s media site lists the MX-5 RF as a 2017 model, meaning we shouldn’t expect it as a late addition to the 2016 model year. Second, a photo posted to Mazda’s Twitter page suggests, in very tiny print, that the production model won’t be available until early 2017. That means it could be a while before we can take it for a spin. That being said, some sources online have stated that pre-orders will be available starting this summer, though Mazda has yet to mention that on any official press release.

Design Changes on the Mazda Miata RF

So, what changes have actually been made with the RF? As many know, the 2016 Miata was a homerun, and therefore we’re pleased that the same engine is found under the hood of the RF and power output figures aren’t expected to change.

In fact, the changes made to the RF seem to be only in design, as the vehicle features a fastback profile and a retractable hardtop roof. The roof is electrically powered and stows away into a compartment in the rear of the vehicle, just like the soft-top Miata, without affecting trunk space. For something in between having the top up or down, there is also a retractable back window.
