2020 Mazda CX-30 Title Name and Size Explanation
Last month, the automotive community was introduced to a brand-new Mazda model. That would be the upcoming 2020 Mazda CX-30 SUV. Set to release later this year, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 is sized between the current 2019 Mazda CX-3 and the 2019 Mazda CX-5 models and is therefore also expected to be priced between them as well.
However, many drivers and fans of the Mazda brand did have one particular question pop into their mind upon learning about this new model. Why is it called the Mazda CX-30? If it’s between the Mazda CX-3 and the Mazda CX-5 why isn’t it just called the Mazda CX-4?
The Mazda CX-4 Problem
We’ll start by answering the second question. Why isn’t the 2020 Mazda CX-30 called the Mazda CX-4? This is because the Mazda CX-4 already exists. The Mazda CX-4 is a popular model that was introduced back in 2016 and is only available for purchase within China. With the name taken, it’s unclear from an outsider’s perspective whether the choice to not take on the Mazda CX-4 name was due to some legal stipulations or to avoid confusion between the very different models. Either way, Mazda chose not to name their new model as another Mazda CX-4.
The Choice of the Mazda CX-30 Name
So, we know why the Mazda CX-4 name was off the table. However, why was the Mazda CX-30 name chosen? Well, Mazda still wanted their new SUV model to be included within the current naming convention of the Mazda SUVs. Those would be the Mazda CX-3, the Mazda CX-5, and the Mazda CX-9. Therefore, rather than using a decimal (3.5), Mazda chose to add a 0 to the end.
What remains to be seen is whether this new twist on the Mazda naming convention will spread to other current and future Mazda models. Will the Mazda CX-3 be rebranded as the Mazda CX-20, and the Mazda CX-5 as the Mazda CX-50? Will we see more in-between models, such as a Mazda CX-35 in the future?
