It appears as if stateside Mazda fans owe a word of thanks to their trans-Atlantic British neighbors. In a story that created considerable weekend buzz, British magazine Auto Car is reporting that all indications point to a return of Mazda’s revered rotary sports car, the RX-7.

Though Mazda has not announced new RX-7 plans with an official statement, Auto Car confirms the coupe’s rotary engine is already in its early stages of production. The same report identifies an approximate 2016 Mazda RX-7 return. (more…)

Mazda is almost synonymous with the rotary-style Wankel engine. The popular configuration was introduced with the Mazda Cosmo at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1963 and had been featured most recently in the 2011-model RX-8. When the RX-8 was removed from the automaker’s lineup that calendar year, Mazda rotary engine production went with it. The earliest accounts in the annals of Mazda rotary engine history come from the 1963 Tokyo Motor Show. The crowd that was gathered to see the latest in Japanese motor car development was ultimately stunned by the Mazda products showcased that year. Engineers Mull More Rear-Wheel Drive Mazdas

The MX-5 Miata is currently the only rear-wheel drive Mazda.

Mazda engineers recently called for an increase of vehicles making use of rear-wheel drive platforms. Since the Mazda RX-8 model was discontinued in 2011, the MX-5 Miata is the only automobile in Mazda’s line that is currently powered by rear-wheel drive. As front-wheel drive (FWD) cars are now most common on the road, Mazda of Lodi thought we would take the time to share some information on rear-wheel drive Mazdas. (more…)
