Today is National Stress Awareness Day, and if you weren’t aware, the daily commute in New Jersey can be awfully hectic. In honor of today, we want to help relieve some of your stress. We may not be able to solve all of New Jersey’s commuting problems, but with a few commuting tips for New Jersey drivers, you’ll be able to relax just a little bit more on your way to work in the morning.

New Jersey is consistently considered one of the worst states for the daily commute, and it’s no surprise, with so many New Jersey residents having to drive near or into New York City each day.   1. Stretch: Whether you take a train, bus or drive yourself, some simple stretching can work wonders. Whenever traffic comes to a complete stop, take a moment to stretch out some muscles, including those in your arms, legs and neck.
  2. Leave early: This may seem like an obvious one, but many drivers don’t try it. Instead, try leaving about 20 minutes early for a few days to see if there is any change in traffic patterns that could relieve some stress.
  3. Look up your route online: Before heading out, it can be helpful to look up your route online to see if there have been any reported delays or accidents that could keep you from getting to work or home on time.
  4. Consider mass transit: If the drive becomes too much, consider mass transit. There may be many drivers who avoid mass transit, as its not for everyone, but it’s also worth trying out to see if it helps out your personal commuting situation.
  5. Stay away from the N.J. Turnpike and Garden State Parkway: These two main roadways see a lot of traffic, and though they may often seem like the most obvious route to take, it doesn’t hurt trying to back roads or alternate roads to see how it affects your commute.
  6. Commute with coffee: It won’t do much to cut down your commute times, but hey, if coffee in the morning helps you stay awake and relaxed then it’s worth adding it to your morning ritual.
