The data is in, and the 2016 Miata is set to greatly improve its fuel efficiency over previous models. Official numbers for the 2016 Mazda Miata gas mileage and specs are coming out left and right, and now, the official EPA fuel economy for the Miata has been revealed.

Available with a manual or automatic transmission, the Miata’s gas mileage figures are an impressive improvement of 25 percent compared to the previous model’s top fuel economy of 22 city and 28 highway mpg. The 2016 Miata will be capable of up to 27 city and 34 highway mpg with the manual transmission, while the automatic transmission model will be capable of boosting the highway economy to 36 highway mpg.

This news comes right after learning that the U.S.-bound 2016 Miata has now begun production. The new model is expected to go on sale in the summer of 2015.

Much of this boost in fuel efficiency can likely be attributed to some changes that have been made to the 2016 Miata. This version of the Miata comes equipped with Mazda’s innovative SKYACTIV engine, which has already made a name for itself with a balanced blend of performance and fuel efficiency in other models. The engine will produce 155 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 2016 Miata is also 150 lbs. lighter than the 2015 model, reaching a total of 2,332 lbs with the manual transmission and 2,381 lbs. with automatic. These improvements help make the 2016 MX-5 a highly anticipated vehicle this year.

Preorders for the Miata begin May 5 at 9 a.m. PDT. The first 1,000 2016 Miata’s sold in the U.S. will be special Launch Edition models that come outfitted with unique badging, and a unique Soul Red exterior and Sport Tan leather interior combination. The Miata will also come in three trim levels — the Sport model, the recently announced Club edition and Grand Touring.

The Miata is expected to arrive in showrooms starting in late summer. Stay up to date with future news about the 2016 Mazda Miata gas mileage and specs, as well as other new models, right here at the Mazda of Lodi blog. As always, feel free to contact us with your automotive needs.
